Sim racing FOV calculator in 3 steps: pick your monitor, pick your game and get the value to enter, with a visual comparison between a wrong and a correct FOV.
iRacing FOV calculator
iRacing asks for the horizontal FOV. Enter your monitor and your distance: the value is ready to type in.
Same monitor, different FOV: on the left the car looks far away and small, on the right the proportions are true to life. That is what this tool fixes.
Your monitor and where you sit
Just two numbers. The diagram updates as you choose.
Which sim do you use?
This gives you the right number: some games want vertical FOV, others horizontal.
Your FOV
Copy this value and set it in the game.
VerticalVertical FOV
You will find it under Settings → View
Your correct FOV, in the cockpit
Compared with a FOV that is too wide (the red panel above), here the car and the distances have the right proportions: you brake at the right point.
Where to set the FOV in iRacing
- iRacing has its own calculator: Settings → Display, in the monitor section, with Monitor Width, Bezel Width and a Field of View Calculator with a Compute button. Our value and that one should agree if you enter the same measurements.
- In the car, [ and ] change the FOV, Shift + [ / ] moves the horizon and Ctrl + [ / ] changes the driver height (iRacing camera tool documentation).
- Community guides also point to Settings → Driving → Driver’s View (Advanced), where the Field Of View slider starts at 78°: far wider than a correct value on a normal desk monitor.
iRacing FOV chart
The horizontal FOV for the most common monitors, by distance from your eyes to the centre of the screen. Single screen, flat or curved: the curve does not change the value.
| Monitor | 50 cm | 60 cm | 70 cm | 80 cm | 90 cm |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24" 16:9 | 56.0° | 47.8° | 41.6° | 36.7° | 32.9° |
| 27" 16:9 | 61.7° | 53.0° | 46.2° | 41.0° | 36.7° |
| 32" 16:9 | 70.6° | 61.1° | 53.7° | 47.8° | 43.0° |
| 34" 21:9 | 76.9° | 67.0° | 59.1° | 52.8° | 47.6° |
| 49" 32:9 | 100.3° | 89.9° | 81.1° | 73.7° | 67.3° |
Calculated with the same formula as the tool above. Measure the distance for real, seated as you drive: it is the number people get wrong most often.
Triple screens
For triple screens use iRacing’s own setup: choose 3 Flat Screens or 3 Curved Screens, enter the angle between centre and side screens (and the radius for curved panels), and enable Render scene using 3 projections so the side screens are drawn with the right perspective. The FOV then follows from the geometry.
Good to know
- iRacing’s own help page warns that a geometrically correct FOV only looks natural if the monitor is close to your face: if the screen sits far behind the wheel, the right value will feel very zoomed in. Move the screen closer before you widen the FOV.
- The driver height is shared by all cars; you can adjust it car by car with the z-offset in the camera tool (Ctrl + F12).
Frequently asked questions
Is the iRacing FOV horizontal or vertical?
Horizontal. iRacing does not state it in its help pages, but community calculators and guides agree, and it matches the in-game calculator. Use the horizontal value from this page.
How do I change FOV in iRacing while driving?
With the [ and ] keys in the car. Shift + [ / ] moves the horizon and Ctrl + [ / ] changes the driver height.
Does iRacing have a built-in FOV calculator?
Yes: Settings → Display, monitor section. Enter monitor width, bezel width and your distance, then press Compute.
